I have great respect for this review and this website, but I have to emphasize I think the SLI section was extremely inadequate. You can't just bench one game barely anyone plays and then declare the issue closed. This is important becaues this card you can buy for just $200 now on the internet. So if anandtech did a thorough test of SLI and it turned out SLI beat out or tied a single GTX in Q4, D3, BF2, etc., that would be highly revealing.
After all this card is on part with 6800 GT and 6800 GT SLI does best a single 7800GT. The difference between the GT and the GS is that you can get a GS for 200, not 270+ like a GT, so this could turn out to be a real steal of a deal. Unfortunately beyond Tech Report's more comprehensive SLI analysis I have nothing to go on...
On another note, a comparison of a overclocked GTO @ XT PE and a overclocked GS would be very interesting. :)
I ditto that. I have an X800GTO2 and it unlocks and OCs to X850XTPE easy. That thing eats 6800GT for breakfast and is cheaper and widely available. The only problem is that it's limited edition.
On the end of the last page there is:
"You can buy the 6800GS today in its eVGA forum at several vendors."
I suppose you wanted to tell "its eVGA form"
I did mention that sli can give almost 2x performance ... but the problem is that it doesn't happen in every game. You get consistently fast perforamnce for your money from the 7800 gtx. That was my point.
Can you try and come up with a better line? Your anti-SLI rants are looking fairly comical when looking at the 6800GS. It is less expensive then the 7800GTX by a decent amount even including the SLI mobo premium and it is almost always faster at resolutions high end users look for. I can understand you avoided running the SLI benchmarks as it makes your comments for some time invalid, but shouldn't you be able to clarify that by saying that the price/performance balance has changed in this singular instance?
Higher mobo costs, higher psu costs, higher heat management costs (more heatsinks, fans, etc). And if you want to upgrade from that, you'll have to sell both cards.
What is wrong with selling your current card and getting a higher end version? Is really more economical to you? Or does it just line nvidia's pockets?
Remember, nvidia makes from the nf4 and from the extra chip sales that would otherwise be lost.
"The 6800 GT falls somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of power draw."
Doesn't make sense, it had the highest and 2nd highest power draw, did you mean 6800 GS?
>>>>>The X800 GTO also has no hope of competing in terms performance or bang for the buck with the 6800 GS<<<<<
I don't know about the USA ,but in the UK that is rubbish ,6800GS is £160 & the X800 GTOs is £115 ,way cheaper!!
Is the price differential so different in the USA?
AGP is going away sooner rather than later. I wouldn't suggest that anyone go out and purchase an AGP card these days unless they have a card that died. In that case, I'd recommend doing a careful analysis of price/performance before buying a new AGP card.
As facts about the card continued to unfold today, we have updated our conclusion to reflect the current state of afairs WRT the 6800 GS.
Quickly: more manufacturers than EVGA will build one, the cost difference between the 6800 GS and GT is ~$75, The rest of the 6800 line is going away with the exception of the GS, and we added a bit about unlocking X800 GTOs.
We stand behind our decision to leave out the X1600 lineup, and I hope you guys will give us the leeway to do things like this in the future. It is always our first priority to bring the community information about present and future hardware. We have already shown the performance characteristics of the supposed X1600, but there is still no retail part so it has no place in the rest of our reviews. In our opinion anyway.
Haven't even read past the first page yet, but I have to say that it's not too good to your readers to let your bias about the lack of X1600 parts affect the integrity and relevance of the review. If you don't like what ATi is doing, then say so, give them bad ratings, whatever, but don't just leave out information. You risk losings readers *very* fast if you continue doing that.
it not lack of information, it's helping us fight company from paper launches etc. To me having a great tech website stands behind us is much better then us doing it alone.
But if you like you can check out the x1000 series review and compare it to the 6600GT/6800GT if like as well. So really no harm done to you or other as well.

Bias implies that you ignores the facts for the purpose of justiying your point of view. Not sure how your comments apply to this article regarding the lack of X1600 parts. Are you suggesting the lack of X1600 is a lie?
Anyway the whole pupose of these type of articles is to show both the good and the bad of these products regardless of who's feelings get hurt.
I never see anything about image clarity, 2d clarity, analog and digital text differences, color rendition etc.
i could give a rat's ass if it has 10 frames difference for this or that, however, if the card doesnt look good visually for people who like detail and their eyes, what's the point?
i am critizing the general trend for video card reviews. The only mention of image quality even in a 3d game was with the Crossfire review compared to SLI done this past month. It said that the sli looked fuzzier. How can everyone be happy with nice frames when the thing looks fuzziER and i put a stress on ER because even this ati all in wonder 9800 pro has fuzziness in it compared to the matrox 550 pci card that is along side it for 2d production type of work (and for writing papers/book).
Just had to vent. I doubt it will be responded to though as to add this would require a lot more work. People say sometimes: it should be the same with dvi to an lcd... i dont use lcd, because it is inferior still to my thousand dollar Mitsubishi 22 inch monitor for gaming and for 2d stuff. So... yeah. thats about it. at .21-.24 dot pitch (center measurement to outer measurement) you see the difference with graphic cards. LCD's dont have the dot pitch yet it seems, so maybe that is why it isnt noticed as much.
just some thoughts.
the card looks nice though. I just havent trusted Nvidia for 2d graphics cards ever.
Hercules versions of cards had the best 2d I have seen, too bad they got swallowed up.
Nuts? Wait..did we read the same review? This card performs nearly identical to the 6800gt priced at near $300 at most places. I would say $209 plus $5 shipping is a pretty decent deal for this kind of performance compared to other cards on the market.
No, I mean nuts in that they could have easily sold it for near the $250 MSRP. It's nuts that all of a sudden today 6800GT performance can be had for a hair over $200.
NV42 = PCIe only, unless they bridge back to AGP. I seriously doubt that will happen, but 6800GT AGP cards are slightly cheaper than PCIe versions already.
"today sees the introduction of a part that performs just as well as the 6800 GT but costs about $100 less."
Uhm, 6800GTs cost around $280, maybe less as I haven't checked in a few days, so you must be implying that I can get a 6800GS for $180. If that's true, then that's more reasonable.
quote: The X800 XL makes a good showing in this benchmark as it performs just ahead of the 6800 GS and GT. While this would be fine if only competing against the 6800 GT, the X800 XL suffers a disadvantage when competing against the much cheaper 6800 GS.
To go back to the beginning of the article:
quote: This upper midrange, sub $250 part is NVIDIA's answer to the X800 GTO and the as of yet unavailable X1600 line up.
The X800XL's lowest retail price on pricewatch is $245. Where would one be saving money at this point buying a 6800GS, assuming you could actually purchase one today?
P.S. I find it likely that the price of the X800XL will be lowered even further to compete.
I think when u say $280 for 6800GT this is not the recommended price set by nvidia (MSRP) but the cheapest online price, im sure the MSRP for 6800GT is around $320, just like u can get 6800GS for less than the MSRP price of $250, $209 at newegg.
It'll be up to ATI I suppose. As it is right now, Nvidia's products tend to fall in price quickly over the first month, so as Derek pointed out, the 6800GS is going to be a ~$220 card in a bit. I'm not sure ATI has enough latitude to get the X800XL's prices that low across the board.
I'll never understand why companies bother with this type of release. It has less pipelines and less engines, yet costs about the same as a 6800GT which has more of both. Why would anyone get this when they can grab a 6800GT?
Same thing with those GTO cards when there's the X800XL or whatever.
According to AT the 6800GS is available today.. yet searching several Etailers and Manufacturer sites show either nothing at all or at most "backordered".
quote: It's ok if Nvidia paper launches products, we'll just overlook that for now..
If you actually read the article you'll notice that Derek mentioned that EVGA will be the only manufacturer of this card AND it will only last a few months. ALSO, Monarch Computers has it in stock for $229.
Look closer at Monarch and you will see the 6800GS is NOT in stock, its available through special order only atm.. as far as evga being the only manufacturer.. LOL not according to nVidia
(Nvidia product release):
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS-based graphics cards are available for immediate purchase at approximately $249 USD from many of the world’s leading add-in card makers, including: Albatron, Chaintech Computer Co. Ltd., eVGA.com Corporation, Galaxy, Innovision, Leadtek Research Inc., MSI Computer Corporation, Palit Microsystems, Inc., PNY Technologies, Inc., Point of View, Prolink, Sparkle Computer Co. Ltd., and XFX. GeForce 6800 GS-based add-in cards are available from major online retailers worldwide and are also powering PCs from the world’s leading system builders.
This bascially introduced 6800 GT performance at a lower price point, these cards perform very similarily and that isn't surprising. Long live competition.

The SLI results you got here are the exact opposite of the ones reported by Tech Report:http://techreport.com/onearticle.x/8993">http://techreport.com/onearticle.x/8993

I wonder what the heck is going on here?

6800GT AGP cards are drying up quickly. Actually, most AGP cards are drying up. I'd say the best bet right now for AGP is from this list:

You'd want the GTO ($200) or Pro ($203) if at all possible (or the XL/XT if they drop in price).

If you actually read the article you'll notice that Derek mentioned that EVGA will be the only manufacturer of this card AND it will only last a few months. ALSO, Monarch Computers has it in stock for $229.Pythias - Monday, November 7, 2005 - link
How's that crow taste? :) $209@newegg.flynnsk - Monday, November 7, 2005 - link
Look closer at Monarch and you will see the 6800GS is NOT in stock, its available through special order only atm.. as far as evga being the only manufacturer.. Why would you buy an X1600XT over a X800GTO anyway? GTO is much faster.DerekWilson - Monday, November 7, 2005 - link

But, IMHO the X800GTO^2 are the better deal for the modder, as they have x850 cores in them.gordon151 - Monday, November 7, 2005 - link
connect3D x800GTO's are the same as the sapphire x800GTO2's, being that they're moddable to x850xt's as well. They retail for about $180 too.puffpio - Monday, November 7, 2005 - link
Are there any GTO/GTO2 softmoddable cards for PCI?What's the best PCI card out there right now?
coldpower27 - Monday, November 7, 2005 - link
This bascially introduced 6800 GT performance at a lower price point, these cards perform very similarily and that isn't surprising. Long live competition.swatX - Monday, November 7, 2005 - link
